How we work — and why it matters

We believe the most effective consulting starts with listening — really listening — before offering any answers. Every organization has its own history, culture, community, and set of challenges. Our job is to understand yours before we build anything together.

We work from the conviction that strong organizations don’t come from outside expertise imposed on top of existing teams — they come from within, when the right support helps people clarify their goals, build their capacity, and find their footing. That’s a collaborative process, and we take the “built with you” in our tagline seriously.

We also believe in accountability — to you, to your mission, and to the communities you serve. That means setting clear goals, tracking progress honestly, and being direct when something isn’t working. Trust is earned through transparency, not promises.

Finally, we care about this work because we believe in it. Clean energy, sustainable transportation, and environmental advocacy aren’t just sectors we happen to consult in — they’re causes we’ve devoted our careers to. That matters, because the best partnerships are built on shared commitment, not just shared contracts.

When engagements call for deeper expertise in areas such as human resources, financial management, administration, or legal matters, we draw on a trusted network of experienced colleagues who share GoForth Partners’ values and approach. This ensures that clients have access to the full range of support they need.

Sam Spofforth, GoForth Partners

Sam Spofforth, Principal

I've spent more than forty years working at the intersection of mission and impact — and I still find it the most interesting place to be.

My career started with Clean Water Action — canvassing door to door, then moving into organizing, policy advocacy, and foundation fundraising across Washington DC, New England, and Eastern Pennsylvania. I learned how to listen, earn trust, and help communities use their voice. I also gained practical experience building organizations, developing programs, and securing the resources to sustain them. Those lessons are very much alive in how I work today.

Completing my graduate degree in Public Administration at the University of Pennsylvania gave me deep grounding in organizational strategy and building support within complex networks. That foundation was critical to my next role, program manager with the City of Columbus. I developed the Central Ohio Clean Fuels Coalition, whose advisory committee became the governing board of the nonprofit I founded in 2002: Clean Fuels Ohio.

Over two decades, Clean Fuels Ohio grew from a $50,000 startup into the largest coalition in the national Clean Cities and Communities network — 15 staff, more than $1 million in operating revenue, model programs replicated nationwide, and more than $50 million in grants and diversified revenue secured. In 2022, I took on a national role through DOE's Vehicle Technologies Office, leading efforts to strengthen and expand the CC&C network — developing 10 new coalitions across nine states and raising effectiveness across the network as a whole.

I started GoForth Partners because the organizations doing the most important work deserve a partner who has actually done that work — not someone observing from the outside, but someone who has built, led, funded, and strengthened organizations like yours.
